Together with Hong Kong Polytechnic University,Ma Wan Park developed various renewable energy systems,to instill in the public the message of resource cherishing and sustainable development. These renewable energy systems produce electrical energy for partial lighting, computers, water features, air conditioning (cooling and heating) avoiding air pollution brought by traditional fossil fuels.
Solar Lighting
Solar Photovoltaic System - Solar radiation that falls on the 18 nos. of integrated photovoltaic modules can generate 3kW electricity, each solar lamp operates independently from others without the need for a transformer and wiring, the solar tracking system can follow the Sun’s movement to receive the maximum solar radiation, just like sunflowers do.
Solar Wind Hybrid System combines solar and wind energy production into one platform.
Solar Energy
Solar Energy is a renewable energy resource that is environmentally friendly. Unlike fossil fuels, solar energy is available everywhere on earth. And this source of energy is free, immune to rising energy prices.
Sunlight is converted to electricity using photovoltaic (PV) cells. PV cells are semiconductor devices, usually made of silicon, which contains no liquids, corrosive chemicals or moving parts.
On the roof of the PV Shelter, 18 photovoltaic modules (2.97 kW rated power) are installed.
Wind Power System
This wind power system consists of two 6 kW wind turbines, can together generate 12kW power and deliver to the utility grid in the park.
Solar Tracker
A solar tracker can utilize a programmed mechanical system or an optical sensing system to sense the sun’s position and track the sun. The sensors feed information to the control unit about the beam irradiance and the diffuse irradiance on the sensors. Based on this information, the tracker controller sends signals to gear the motor that moves the panel perpendicular to the sun’s rays.
This solar tracking system in the park uses a programmed mechanical tracking system and consists of three 165 W PV panels.
Hydro Power System
Schemes generate electricity by converting the potential energy available in water tank at hilltop.
Ground Coupled Heat Pump System
Two inclined and two vertical ground heat exchangers with same depth of 32 metres have been installed. The system is similar to ordinary air conditioning, but uses the ground instead of outside air or surface water for heat rejection or heat extraction to provide heating or cooling.
Biomass system
Biogas is generated when bacteria degrade biological material in the absence of oxygen, in a process known as anaerobic digestion. It is used directly for cooking, heating and lighting.
